This talk will include a summary of how Maine’s climate is changing, the challenges and opportunities these changes will likely bringing for our growers, and what farmers are doing to adapt. Birthisel will draw on interviews with farmers and crop advisers that she is currently conducting as part of a joint project between University of Maine and University of Vermont aimed at better understand how climate change fits within growers’ whole-farm management perspectives and developing useful outreach in this area.
Sonja Birthisel is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Maine. Her research interests include climate change impacts to Maine agriculture, and she has particular expertise in challenges related to weed management. Dr. Birthisel is an active member of the Maine Climate and Agriculture Network.
