Maine mead maker Sean Bailey will speak about how mead, honey wine, is made and will offer tips for those interested in creating their own mead. He’ll discuss a brief history of where it came from, how he got his start, the unique opportunities of making an agricultural product in the state of Maine, the farm winery licensing process, and the difficulties and surprising results of his seven-year journey to today.

A native Mainer, Bailey founded The Fat Friar’s Meadery in Newcastle, Maine after a trip to Germany with his wife in 2009. Already an experienced wine-maker, Bailey was so impressed with German meads he began producing his own, becoming an official farm winery in 2010.
