Longtime volunteer Eric Evans leads a hands-on program on how to build bird nesting boxes at Merryspring Nature Center on Saturday, February 17 at 10:00 AM.

Nesting boxes provide safe places to roost and nest for a very large variety of birds and wildlife. In this class, guests will learn about the importance of nesting boxes, where and what time of year to place them, and how different bird species need specific dimensions to nest comfortably inside boxes.

Each participant will build and take home a nesting box for a species of their choice. Available options are saw-whet owl, kestrel, bluebird/tree swallow, crested fly-catcher, flicker, red bellied woodpecker, and wren boxes. Guests must register by Friday, February 9 and must indicate which type of box they would like to build. Space is limited, and pre-payment is necessary.

The cost of this workshop is $25, with a discounted rate of $20 for members of Merryspring. To sign up, please contact Merryspring at 236-2239 or info@merryspring.org by February 9.

Evans is a longtime volunteer at Merryspring and a Breeding Coordinator for the Maine Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation. He lives and gardens in Camden.
