Merryspring’s Hidden History with Harbour Mitchell- March 5
March 5th: 12:00 pm
Archaeologist Harbour Mitchell presents his finding after digging through over 200 years of history at Merrypring during the past year.
Part of the Winter Talk series sponsored by Allen Insurance & Financial
In early 2018 Harbour Mitchell noticed some strange depressions in the ground at Merryspring Nature Center. With the blessing of Merryspring’s trustees, he began an archaeological dig which lasted through the summer months and into the fall. What he discovered was substantial – two historic sites: the Hosmer Farm, ca. 1800-1820, and “The Homestead Site”, one of Camden’s first Colonial occupations, ca. 1770-1800. In this very special program, Harbour will discuss his archaeological exploration of both these sites to date; what has been revealed, a possible explanation as to why they are located where they are, and why their occupations ended.
Mitchell’s archaeological career extends nearly 30 years and includes working for the University of Maine, the Maine Historic Preservation Commission in Augusta, the US Dept. of Agriculture, and professional archaeological contractors throughout the region. His research continues today as private efforts in midcoast Maine.
