Using Orchards as a Teaching Tool with Richard Hodges – October 27

October 27th, 2020: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Richard Hodges of ReTreeUs will lead an outdoor presentation on how his organization is using fruit orchards to inspire Maine students at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, October 27 at 12:00 pm.

ReTreeUS (retreeus.org) is a nonprofit program that plants educational orchards in schools and provides school garden support. In this talk you will hear from Founder and Program Manager, Richard Hodges, about the orchards that have spread across the state of Maine and how they are benefiting and empowering students. Guests will also learn about how RetreeUS’ approach to school gardens aligns their production and cultivation with the school calendar. There will be plenty of time for discussion, questions and answers in this fruitful conversation.

Hodges is a Maine native who was inspired to create orchards in schools through his experiences as a garden educator at Exploring New Horizons Outdoor School in California. Hodges has decades of experience as an outdoor guide, garden educator and naturalist, and is dedicated to inspiring the younger generations to grow their own food and to care for the environment. Along with a BA from the University of Vermont, Hodges is a Master Gardener, a certified Permaculture Designer, and graduate of Maine’s Sustainable Food System Leadership Institute. Most importantly, Hodges cares deeply about instilling hope and inspiration in people and planting trees of fruit and seeds of thought.

This event is part of the Summer Talk series, sponsored by First National Bank.
